Since the onset of the COVID 19 virus in 2020, the public has become familiar with its many variants and symptoms and has returned to a relatively level of normalcy. Is there still a reason for concern?
A variant called JN.1 is now the most common strain of the virus and accounted for approximately 44% of the cases this past December. JN.1 does not seem to be causing severe illness although a mild case can still make someone feel miserable. The symptoms are similar to previous COVID variants including a cough, fever, body ache and fatigue. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC) still advises continued mask wearing, improvement of ventilation indoors, staying home when sick and getting the latest vaccines. There are signs that COVID 19 hospitalization rates are creeping up but no where near as high during the peak of the epidemic in 2020.
The NYC Department of Health recommends that everyone six months or older should get vaccinated. While anyone can become very sick from COVID-19, the vaccine is especially life saving for people who:
· Are 65 and older.
· Are pregnant.
· Have an underlying health condition.
· Have a severe disability that may increase their risk for having an underlying health condition.
Anyone can call (212) 268 – 4319 for vaccination assistance.
